King Charles III (born Nov. 14, 1948) officially became the King of England on Sept. 8, 2022 after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, at the age of 96. As The Queen’s oldest child of four, Charles was proclaimed King immediately following her passing. Charles’ parents were Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, who died in April 2021. His grandparents were King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.

King Charles III became the Prince of Wales in 1958. During his reign as a Prince, he took part in the usual official royal and military duties. Of course, Charles was also known for his relationship with Princess Diana Spencer, who he met in 1977. In the early 80s, they began seeing each other romantically, and he proposed in 1981, marrying that July. Charles and Diana are the parents of Prince William and Prince Harry.

Charles and Diana famously separated in 1992 after she exposed his affair with his now-wife Queen consort Camilla Bowles. They officially divorced in August 1996, one year before Diana was tragically killed in a car accident. Charles and Camilla were married in 2005.

Through William and Harry, Charles has five grandchildren (Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis, Archie and Lilibet). William is married to Kate Middleton, while Harry is married to Meghan Markle. A rift between Charles/William and Harry was made public following Harry and Meghan’s decision to step away from their royal duties in 2020. The status of their relationships as of 2022 is unclear, but they were all together for Prince Philip’s funeral, and reunited amidst The Queen’s death, as well.
