Over 30 years after <strong><a  href=\"https:\/\/hollywoodlife.com\/celeb\/tim-burton\/\"  target=\"_blank\"  rel=\"noopener\"  >Tim Burton<\/a>&#8216;<\/strong>s\u00a0<em><a  href=\"https:\/\/hollywoodlife.com\/feature\/beetlejuice-cast-then-and-now-transformations-photos-4236904\/\"  target=\"_blank\"  rel=\"noopener\"  >Beetlejuice<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>came out, a sequel film is finally happening. <a  href=\"https:\/\/hollywoodlife.com\/tag\/jenna-ortega\"  ><strong>Jenna Ortega<\/strong><\/a>, one of Hollywood&#8217;s brightest young stars, is playing the daughter of <a  href=\"https:\/\/hollywoodlife.com\/celeb\/winona-ryder\/\"  ><strong>Winona Ryder<\/strong><\/a>&#8216;s character, Lydia Deetz, while Winona will reprise her iconic role. <a  href=\"https:\/\/hollywoodlife.com\/tag\/michael-keaton\/\"  ><strong>Michael Keaton<\/strong><\/a> is suiting up as Betelgeuse once again. The film, which is officially titled <i>Beetlejuice Beetlejuice<\/i>, will be released in theaters on September 6, 2024. They make contact with an over-the-top bio-exorcist named Betelgeuse, but his antics only complicate matters.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-4\"><em>Beetlejuice 2<\/em> was officially confirmed in February 2022, per <a  href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2022\/02\/beetlejuice-2-brad-pitts-plan-b-boards-sequel-in-early-development-1234962240\/\"  target=\"_blank\"  ><em>Deadline<\/em><\/a>, with <a  href=\"https:\/\/hollywoodlife.com\/celeb\/brad-pitt\/\"  target=\"_blank\"  rel=\"noopener\"  ><strong>Brad Pitt<\/strong><\/a>&#8216;s Plan B Entertainment producing alongside Warner Bros. It\u2019s so fun, it\u2019s so great. And you know what it is? We\u2019ve both said we\u2019re doing it many times. We both agreed, if it happens, it has to be done as close to the way we made it the first time. Making stuff up, making stuff happen, improvising and riffing, but literally handmade stuff like people creating things with their hands and building something.&#8221; He added, &#8220;It\u2019s the most fun I\u2019ve had working on a movie in I can\u2019t tell you how long.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-9\">Winona, who currently stars in Netflix&#8217;s <a  href=\"https:\/\/hollywoodlife.com\/feature\/when-is-stranger-things-season-4-4266839\/\"  target=\"_blank\"  rel=\"noopener\"  ><em>Stranger Things<\/em><\/a>, previously expressed interest in starring in a <em>Beetlejuice\u00a0<\/em>sequel. \u201cI love Lydia Deetz so much. She was such a huge part of me,&#8221; Winona told <a  href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/articles\/2013\/11\/18\/exclusive-winona-ryder-on-beetlejuice-2-looks-like-it-s-happening-with-burton-keaton-and-ryder.html\"  target=\"_blank\"  rel=\"noopener nofollow\"  ><em>The Daily Beast<\/em><\/a>\u00a0in 2013. &#8220;I would be really interested in what she is doing 27 years later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-10\">Other cast members\u2019 returns have yet to be announced. Alec\u2019s return is questionable due to the controversy from the <a  href=\"https:\/\/hollywoodlife.com\/2021\/12\/02\/alec-baldwin-first-interview-rust-shooting-george-stephanopoulos\/\"  target=\"_blank\"  rel=\"noopener\"  data-analytics-trigger=\"article-body-link\"  ><em>Rust\u00a0<\/em>shooting incident<\/a>. (Shutterstock)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-11\">In March 2023, it was reported by <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/jenna-ortega-beetlejuice-2-1235342774\/\"  target=\"_blank\"  ><em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em><\/a> that<a  href=\"https:\/\/hollywoodlife.com\/feature\/wednesday-season-2-5030131\/\"  ><em> Wednesday<\/em><\/a> breakout star <strong>Jenna Ortega<\/strong> was in talks to join the sequel. Her casting was confirmed in April 2023 at CinemaCon. Jenna will play Astrid in the movie.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-12\">&#8220;I don\u2019t know how much I\u2019m allowed to say, but I am Lydia Deetz\u2019s daughter, so I\u2019ll give that away,\u201d she told <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/jenna-ortega-2024-hollywood-portfolio-interview\"  target=\"_blank\"  rel=\"noopener nofollow\"  ><em>Vanity Fair<\/em>.<\/a> \u201cShe\u2019s weird, but in a different way and not in the way you\u2019d assume, I would say. The relationship between Lydia and Astrid, my character, is very important. And it\u2019s also really strange because it\u2019s a lot of catching up and putting the pieces together of what\u2019s gone on in Lydia\u2019s life since, which is nice, I think, for anybody who loves the character and is excited to see her again.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-13\">The sequel marks Jenna&#8217;s second project with Burton, who directed the <em>Beetlejuice <\/em>sequel. The famous filmmaker has been asked about having <strong><a  href=\"https:\/\/hollywoodlife.com\/celeb\/johnny-depp\/\"  target=\"_blank\"  rel=\"noopener\"  data-analytics-trigger=\"article-body-link\"  >Johnny Depp<\/a> <\/strong>star in\u00a0<em>Beetlejuice 2<\/em>\u00a0and didn&#8217;t deny anything when he spoke to <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.mtv.com\/news\/q310rg\/johnny-depp-tim-burton-beetlejuice\"  rel=\"nofollow\"  target=\"_blank\"  ><em>MTV<\/em> <\/a>about the possibility in 2012. Tim and Johnny enjoy working together and have already brought incredible films to the screen, such as <em>Edward Scissorhands<\/em><em>, Sleepy Hallow, Charlie &amp; The Chocolate Factory<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>Sweeney Todd<\/em>. In 2015, he told <a  href=\"https:\/\/collider.com\/beetlejuice-2-update-tim-burton\/\"  target=\"_blank\"  ><em>Collider\u00a0<\/em><\/a>he would sign on to direct a sequel if it made sense. \u201cThis is the thing, it\u2019s something that I\u2019m interested in, but there\u2019s so many stories [online], dumping Michael Keaton for Johnny Depp and this or that, and I\u2019ve talked to these people and they didn\u2019t wanna hear this so they just made up a story,&#8221; he pressed.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-15\">&#8220;But the fact of it is I have talked to Michael and I have talked to Winona, I\u2019ve talked to a few people,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;It\u2019s something that I really would like to do in the right circumstances, but it\u2019s one of those films where it has to be right. It\u2019s not a kind of a movie that cries out [for a sequel], it\u2019s not the <em>Beetlejuice<\/em> trilogy. So it\u2019s something that if the elements are right \u2014 because I do love the character and Michael\u2019s amazing as that character, so yeah we\u2019ll see. But there\u2019s nothing concrete yet.\u201d That&#8217;s certainly promising!<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-16\">Michael shared a similar sentiment when he spoke about the potential sequel in 2016. &#8220;It&#8217;s possible that ship has sailed,&#8221; he told <a  href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2016\/film\/news\/beetlejuice-sequel-has-to-be-done-right-michael-keaton-says-1201824781\/\"  target=\"_blank\"  ><em>Variety<\/em><\/a>. &#8220;The only way to do it is to do it right. So much of it was improvised, and so much was beautifully handmade by the artist that is Tim Burton. If you can&#8217;t get close to that, you leave it alone.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-17\">Furthermore, Geena revealed that she &#8220;would of course like to revisit&#8221; <em>Beetlejuice <\/em>in an October 2022 chat with <a  href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/movies\/geena-davis-wants-to-do-beetlejuice-sequel-exclusive\/\"  target=\"_blank\"  ><em>PEOPLE<\/em><\/a>, but also said she has no information about the sequel and has not yet been contacted about it. &#8220;I want to play every character I&#8217;ve ever played again,&#8221; she added. As mentioned before, Plan B Entertainment and Warner Bros. will produce <em>Beetlejuice<\/em> <em>2<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2>&#8216;Beetlejuice 2&#8217; Filming News<\/h2>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-18\">Production began on <em>Beetlejuice 2<\/em> in May 2023 amid the ongoing writers&#8217; strike. <strong>Winona Ryder<\/strong> was <a  href=\"https:\/\/hollywoodlife.com\/2023\/05\/18\/winona-ryder-beetlejuice-2-first-photos-lydia-deetz\/\"  >seen back in character<\/a> as Lydia Deetz on May 18 in Hertfordshire, England. After 35 years, Lydia&#8217;s still got her spiky hair and vampy makeup look.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-19\">On July 5, Jenna\u00a0and Winona were spotted filming what appears to be a <a  href=\"https:\/\/hollywoodlife.com\/2023\/07\/06\/jenna-ortega-winona-ryder-filming-beetlejuice-2-wedding-scene-photos\/\"  >wedding scene for the sequel<\/a>. Jenna was in full wedding attire, including a white tulle gown with some added pink coloring, a wedding veil, and more. Winona was covered up in a black parka as she prepared to film a scene. Filming wrapped in November 2023.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-20\">The first look at the film dropped in March 2024, per <a  href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/beetlejuice-2-first-look-michael-keaton-winona-ryder-8611171\"  target=\"_blank\"  rel=\"noopener nofollow\"  ><em>Entertainment Weekly.<\/em><\/a> The scene still showed Michael, Jenna, Winona and <strong>Justin Theroux<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>The Link To The Original &#8216;Beetlejuice&#8217;<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4706665\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4706665\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4706665\" src=\"https:\/\/hollywoodlife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/beetlejuice-2-release-date-ec-embed2.jpg?resize=620%2C424\" alt=\"Beetlejuice\" width=\"620\" height=\"424\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4706665\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Beetlejuice (Photo: Everett Collection)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-21\"><strong>Michael McDowell <\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Warren Skaaren<\/strong> wrote the screenplay for the original <em>Beetlejuice<\/em>, while Tim directed. The movie was a massive hit after its 1998 release and even won the Academy Award for Best Makeup in 1999. Its success spawned numerous offshoots, starting with an animated TV series of the same name that ran on ABC, and then Fox, from 1989 to 1991. Tim produced the project. Then, several <em>Beetlejuice\u00a0<\/em>video games were released, starting in 1990. The popular film was also adapted into a Broadway stage musical that opened in April 2019. The show closed in March 2020 due to the <a  href=\"https:\/\/hollywoodlife.com\/tag\/coronavirus\/\"  target=\"_blank\"  rel=\"noopener\"  >COVID-19 pandemic<\/a>\u00a0but reopened at the Marquis Theatre in April 2022.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-22\">No plot details have been revealed for\u00a0<em>Beetlejuice 2<\/em>. It would make sense for the sequel to take place many years after the events of the first film. Spoiler alert: <em>Beetlejuice\u00a0<\/em>ends with the Deetzes and Maitlands living in the home harmoniously, while Betelgeuse ends up in the afterlife waiting room and gets his head shrunk by a witch doctor.<\/p>\n<h2>Production Trivia<\/h2>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-23\">It&#8217;s been a long road to\u00a0<em>Beetlejuice 2<\/em>. Plans for the sequel began in 1990 when Tim hired <strong>Jonathan Gems\u00a0<\/strong>to write a second movie called\u00a0<em>Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian, <\/em>per <a  href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/beetlejuice-2-sequel-unmade-movie-explained\/\"  rel=\"nofollow\"  target=\"_blank\"  ><em>ScreenRant<\/em><\/a>. It would&#8217;ve focused on the Deetzes moving to Hawaii, where they are haunted by a spirit. Warner Bros. hired <strong>Seth Grahame-Smith<\/strong>, who worked with Tim on <em>Dark Shadows\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter<\/em>, to write and produce the project. Winona even gushed about the sequel in a 2013 interview with <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/winona-ryder-on-beetlejuice-2-might-be-happening-with-burton-keaton-and-ryder\"  rel=\"nofollow\"  target=\"_blank\"  ><em>The Daily Beast<\/em><\/a>. &#8220;I&#8217;m kind of sworn to secrecy but it sounds like it might be happening. It&#8217;s 27 years later,&#8221; she confirmed. &#8220;And I have to say, I love Lydia Deetz so much. She was such a huge part of me.
