Jay-Z<\/strong><\/a> wouldn\u2019t be where he is today without his mother, Gloria Carter<\/strong>. Jay’s mom has been the inspiration for so much of his work, and the rapper regularly name-drops her in his songs. \u201cMy mom always taught me\u2014you know, little boys listen to their moms too much\u2014that whatever you put into something is what you’re going to get out of it,\u201d Jay-Z told O Magazine<\/a>. \u201c<\/em> I had to fully let go of what I was doing before for the music to be successful. That was a leap of faith for me. I said, “I have to give this everything.” With that work ethic, Jay-Z became not just one of the greatest rappers of all time but a mogul who Forbes estimated<\/a> in 2022 was worth around $1.3 billion.<\/p>\n After Gloria’s sexuality was revealed on the\u00a04:44\u00a0<\/em>track “Smile” in 2017, it was revealed that Jay’s mom had married her longtime partner\u00a0Roxane Wiltshire\u00a0<\/strong>over the 2023 Fourth of July weekend in Tribeca, NY, according to\u00a0People<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em>The pair reportedly had an intimate ceremony with tons of celebrities, like Jay, his wife\u00a0Beyonce<\/a>,\u00a0<\/strong>Kelly Rowland,<\/a> Tyler Perry,<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and more.<\/p>\n Everything that Hova has reaped, he has made sure to give back to not just his community but to the woman who raised him. Here\u2019s what you need to know about Gloria.<\/p>\n Jay-Z, born Shawn Carter<\/strong>, grew up in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn. His father, Adnis Reeves<\/strong>, abandoned Jay-Z\u2019s mother, his two older sisters, and his older brother. Jay-Z was just 11. \u201cWe were living in a tough situation, but my mother managed,\u201d Jay-Z told Vanity Fair<\/a> <\/em>in 2013. \u201cShe juggled. Sometimes we\u2019d pay the light bill, sometimes we paid the phone, sometimes the gas went off. We weren\u2019t starving\u2014we were eating, we were O.K. But it was things like you didn\u2019t want to be embarrassed when you went to school; you didn\u2019t want to have dirty sneakers or wear the same clothes over again.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe were told our parents would separate, but the reasons weren’t explained,\u201d Jay-Z told O <\/em>magazine in 2009<\/a>. \u201cMy mom prepared us more than he did. He was a guy who was pretty detached from his feelings.\u201d When asked why his father left, Jay-Z said, \u201cI summed it up that they weren’t getting along. There was a lot of arguing.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI also felt protective of my mom. I remember telling her, \u2018Don’t worry, when I get big, I’m going to take care of this.\u2019 I felt like I had to step up,\u201d Jay told Oprah Winfrey. <\/strong>\u201cI was 11 years old, right? After a year of retirement, Gloria realized something. \u201cI was bored,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n In 2003, Gloria and Jay-Z launched the Shawn Carter Foundation, a public charity that aims to \u201chelp individuals facing socio-economic hardships further their education at post-secondary institutions.\u201d Since its creation, over \u201c$4MM have supported initiatives to empower youth and communities in need through the Foundation\u2019s programs: Scholarship Fund, College Prep and Exposure, International Exposure, Professional Development, Scholar Support, and Community & Goodwill Programs,\u201d per the foundation\u2019s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n “The underserved have so many problems,” Gloria told USA Today<\/em>. \u201cSometimes they need someone to give them a hand.\u201d The fund helps students across the country, typically from low-income households. \u201cWe have kids who act as the moms and dads of their families, kids who are products of the foster care system, kids who were in prison,\u201d said executive director Diana Diaz.<\/strong> \u201cThey still want to pursue a further education, whether it’s at a four-year institution or a community college or vocational school.”<\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019s so many people that have a desire to go to college, but they can\u2019t get the funding. With me taking on this responsibility, we make dreams come true,\u201d Gloria told ESSENCE<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n Gloria joined her son on the track song \u201cSmile,\u201d off his 2017 album, 4:44<\/em>. \u201cMama had four kids, but she’s a lesbian \/ Had to pretend so long that she’s a thespian,\u201d rapped Jay-Z in the opening verse, revealing his mother’s sexuality to the world. Gloria recounted how she told her son about this undeniable truth<\/a>, and how that left the rapper in tears.<\/p>\n \u201cI just finally started telling Jay who I was. Besides your mother, this is the person that I am. This is the life that I live,\u201d she told Dusse Friday<\/em><\/a> (h\/t PEOPLE<\/a><\/em>). \u201cSo my son started actually tearing. He\u2019s like, \u2018That had to be a horrible life, ma.\u2019 I was like, my life was never horrible. It was just different. So that made him want to do a song about it, and the first time I heard the song I was like, eh, I don\u2019t know dude. I ain\u2019t feeling that.\u201d<\/p>\n Gloria said she only told Jay-Z because it was something that was never discussed. \u201cI was never ashamed of me. I\u2019m tired of all the mystery.
