A third film in the\u00a0Sherlock Holmes\u00a0<\/em>franchise has been in the works for over a decade. But the plans have stalled, due to several factors, and\u00a0Sherlock Holmes 3\u00a0<\/em>has not even begun filming yet. The good news is Robert Downey has room in his schedule after saying goodbye to his role as Iron-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after 2019’s\u00a0Avengers: Endgame<\/em><\/a>. Since then, he’s filmed the upcoming 2023 movie\u00a0Oppenheimer<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>which is about creating the nuclear weapons that ended World War II.<\/p>\n Below,\u00a0HollywoodLife\u00a0<\/strong>has rounded up everything you need to know about\u00a0Sherlock Holmes 3<\/em>. Find out if the movie is still happening and the possible spinoffs that are rumored to be in the works!<\/p>\n The script for the third\u00a0Sherlock Holmes\u00a0<\/em>movie was being written by\u00a0Drew Pearce\u00a0<\/strong>(who wrote\u00a0Iron-Man 3<\/em>) in late October 2011, but Drew was replaced by\u00a0Justin Haythe<\/strong>. After five years passed, Warner Bros. and Team Downey, which is Robert and his wife Susan Downey<\/strong><\/a>‘s production company, put together a writers’ room to work on the third film. In May 2018, Warner Bros. announced that\u00a0Sherlock Holmes 3\u00a0<\/em>would be released in theaters on December 25, 2020, with Robert Downey, Jude Law, and\u00a0Paul Anderson<\/strong>,\u00a0who played Sebastian Moran in the second film, returning in their respective roles. Chris Brancato<\/strong> was tapped to write the script.<\/p>\n The following year, Warner Bros. pushed the release date back to December 22, 2021. A few months later, it was announced that\u00a0Dexter Fletcher<\/strong>, who directed the Elton John<\/strong><\/a> biopic\u00a0Rocketman<\/em>, would be replacing Guy Ritchie to helm\u00a0Sherlock Holmes 3<\/em>. Once the COVID-19 pandemic began in March 2020, the film’s release date was delayed indefinitely and there’s still been no update and when we should expect to see it come out.<\/p>\n In April 2022, Variety<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>reported that Team Downey is working on two television spinoffs of the\u00a0Sherlock Holmes\u00a0<\/em>film franchise. Each show would focus on a new character that would be introduced in\u00a0Sherlock\u00a0Holmes 3<\/i>, per the report. There’s been no confirmation about the spinoffs beyond the initial\u00a0report from\u00a0Variety<\/em>.<\/p>\n The entire cast and crew for Sherlock Holmes 3<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>have\u00a0not been\u00a0officially announced. Guy Ritchie\u00a0directed the first two\u00a0Sherlock\u00a0Holmes\u00a0<\/i>movies, but he’s been replaced by Dexter Fletcher for the third film. Dexter spoke about how the pandemic “derailed”\u00a0Sherlock\u00a0Holmes 3\u00a0<\/i>in a June 2022 interview with\u00a0Collider<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n “I do think it will get made. I think it has to be made. I don\u2019t know what the timeline of that is, unfortunately, but I believe it should be,” Dexter said. “It\u2019s fantastic. I think it\u2019s about all the right people being at the right place, at the right time. I think it\u2019s that. It\u2019s one of those cruel twists of fate, where the pandemic hit and that scattered people around the world to the wind. But I know that the appetite is huge for it, and I\u2019m sure there are other people acutely aware of that as well. But I believe it should be because it\u2019s brilliant. I very much hope so.”<\/p>\n From the first two movies, the behind-the-scenes crew included producers\u00a0Joel Silver<\/strong>,\u00a0Lionel Wigram\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Dan Lin<\/strong>, cinematographer Philippe Rousselot<\/strong>, music composer Hans Zimmer<\/strong>, and editor James Herbert<\/strong>. It’s unclear if they’ll all return for\u00a0Sherlock Holmes 3<\/em>. Chris Brancato was the most recent person to be hired as screenwriter for the third film.<\/p>\n When Warner Bros. announced\u00a0Sherlock Holmes 3<\/em>, they confirmed that Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law were returning as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson, respectively. Paul Anderson was also confirmed to be returning as Sebastian Moran. Beyond that, there’s been no announcement about the returns of the other cast members from the first two films.<\/p>\n The original cast also included\u00a0Rachel McAdams<\/strong> <\/a>as Irene Adler,\u00a0Yellowstone\u00a0<\/em>star Kelly Reilly<\/strong><\/a> as Mary Morstan,\u00a0Eddie Marsan\u00a0<\/strong>as Inspector Lestrade, and\u00a0Geraldine James\u00a0<\/strong>as Mrs. Hudson.
