In November 2022, he took to his <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Ck3Z0OVLtoH\/\"  target=\"_blank\"  >Instagram<\/a> and <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@nickjonas?lang=en\"  target=\"_blank\"  >TikTok<\/a> to share the four warning signs associated with a type 1 diabetes diagnosis: weight loss, excessive thirst, frequent urination and irritability. &#8220;I&#8217;m sharing my signs so that others can #SeeTheSigns,&#8221; he captioned the helpful clip.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-4\">In another example of his activism, Nick teamed up with the medical brand Dexcom to promote their new CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitoring) device, which lets diabetes patients easily monitor their glucose levels. I was just so concerned that it was going to limit my ability to do all the things I wanted to do,&#8221; Nick added. &#8220;I was very scared \u2014 it\u2019s a big life change.&#8221; However, he soon learned it was a &#8220;very manageable disease&#8221; as long as the patient is &#8220;really diligent.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-9\">He spoke more about the early stages of his battle in February, telling <a  href=\"http:\/\/\u201cIt%20was%20frightening%20at%20first,%20because%20I%20didn\u2019t%20have%20a%20total%20grip%20on%20on%20what%20my%20new%20reality%20was,\u201d%20he%20admits.%20\u201cBut%20I%20felt%20like%20I%20was%20already%20sort%20of%20in%20the%20public%20eye%20to%20a%20certain%20degree,%20and%20I%20wanted%20to%20normalize%20it%20for%20me%20and%20for%20people%20that%20followed%20me%20at%20the%20time.\u201d\"  rel=\"nofollow\"  target=\"_blank\"  ><em>Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a> that although is was a scary diagnosis, he knew he could use his platform to help his peers who were struggling with it. \u201cIt was frightening at first, because I didn\u2019t have a total grip on on what my new reality was,\u201d he admitted. \u201cBut I felt like I was already sort of in the public eye to a certain degree, and I wanted to normalize it for me and for people that followed me at the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>What Is Type 1 Diabetes?<\/h2>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-10\">Being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes means your pancreas creates little to no insulin, and requires regular medication, per the <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/diabetes\/basics\/what-is-type-1-diabetes.html\"  target=\"_blank\"  ><em>Center for Disease Control &amp; Prevention<\/em><\/a>. Without insulin, blood sugar can\u2019t get into cells for use as energy and builds up in the bloodstream, which is damaging to the body and causes many of the symptoms and complications of diabetes, such as heart and blood vessel disease, nerve damage and kidney damage, per the outlet. It usually develops in children, teens, and young adults. Treatment is directed toward managing the amount of sugar in the blood using insulin, diet and lifestyle to prevent complications.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-11\">Type 1 diabetes is also much less common than type 2 diabetes, as about 5-10% of people with diabetes have type 1, according to the CDC. However, there is still no cure for type 1 diabetes.<\/p>\n<h2>How Long Has Nick Jonas Been Sick?<\/h2>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-12\">With his aforementioned early diagnosis, Nick has been aware of his type 1 diabetes for almost 20 years. &#8220;When I was first diagnosed, I was sitting in the hospital and was scared to death, honestly, while I was learning about how to manage this new thing I was dealing with,&#8221; Nick recalled to <a  href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/health\/nick-jonas-shares-early-diabetes-symptoms-world-diabetes-day\/\"  target=\"_blank\"  ><em>People<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5088106\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5088106\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5088106 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/hollywoodlife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/nick-jonas-priyanka-spl-embed-3.jpg?resize=620%2C930\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"930\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5088106\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nick Jonas and wife Priyanka Chopra.
