Barbiemania is still in full swing, and many are calling for a sequel. Here’s what Greta Gerwig said about the possibility of making ‘Barbie 2.’<\/h3>\n

It’s Barbie’s world<\/a>, and we’re just living in it. Last year has been all about Barbie<\/em><\/a>, and the highly-anticipated film is already one of the biggest blockbusters ever. Margot Robbie<\/strong><\/a> and Ryan Gosling<\/strong><\/a> lead Greta Gerwig’s<\/strong> live-action flick about the beloved doll and all her friends has already amassed over $400 million in less than a week. The movie has a razor-sharp script and is deeply feminist. Barbie<\/em> also brings the laughs (and some tears) in one of the best films of the year.<\/p>\n

So, what does this mean for Barbie 2<\/em>? Is a sequel happening? Greta is addressing her thoughts on a Barbie<\/em> sequel after the film’s mega success.<\/p>\n

Will There Be A Barbie 2<\/em>?<\/h2>\n

As of right now, Barbie 2<\/em> has not gotten the green light. Warner Bros. hasn’t announced anything official ahead of Barbie’s<\/em> release on July 21. Depending on the box office results, Barbie 2<\/em> could be in the works sooner than we think. Barbie<\/em> made a whopping $22.3 million just in previews, so the probability of a sequel is better than ever.<\/p>\n

Director Greta Gerwig<\/strong> addressed whether or not she would seek out making a sequel while being honored as one of TIME<\/em>‘s Women of the Year. \u201cIf I find the undertow, then we get it. If I don\u2019t find an undertow, there\u2019s no more,” Greta said, per Variety<\/em><\/a>. The actress and filmmaker then explained her mindset on the possibility.<\/p>\n

“My North Star is \u2018What do I deeply love? What do I really care about? Like, \u2018What\u2019s the story underneath this story?’\u201d she explained. \u201cAnd I think with Barbie<\/em>, the story underneath this story was I loved Barbie. I remember going to Toys R Us and looking at Barbies and I loved their hair. And I loved everything about them and my mom was not sure about it. And I find that\u2019s the story, that\u2019s the generational story\u2026I\u2019m always trying to find those undertows.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked about the film’s ending and the possibility of a Barbie<\/em> sequel, Greta said “anything’s possible” on the Inside Total Film<\/em> podcast<\/a>. “I would say today, the main thing I’m focused on is the next 15 days and then I’ll see what happens after that… I will say I loved making it so much. It was such a joyful experience. It was so wonderful. It really allowed us to go in all these different directions and I don’t think any other movie would have afforded those opportunities. I mean it was almost like I got to live out my dream of making a 1950s sound-stage musical, which I can’t imagine anything else would have been.”<\/p>\n

Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz<\/strong> is hopeful about more Barbie movies. “We\u2019re looking to create movies that become cultural events,” he told TIME<\/em><\/a>. “If you can excite filmmakers like Greta and Noah [Baumbach]<\/strong> to embrace the opportunity and have creative freedom, you can have a real impact.”<\/p>\n

Following Barbie’s<\/em> gigantic $155 million opening weekend, Greta was asked again about Barbie 2<\/em>. “At this moment, it\u2019s all I\u2019ve got,” she told The New York<\/em> <\/a>Times.<\/em> “I feel like that at the end of every movie, like I\u2019ll never have another idea and everything I\u2019ve ever wanted to do, I did. I wouldn\u2019t want to squash anybody else\u2019s dream but for me, at this moment, I\u2019m at totally zero.”<\/p>\n

However, Mattel has big plans for Barbie. “Barbie, as a brand, has many different iterations. The product lines of Barbie is a very broad brand. In addition to the main Barbie figure, she has family, she has a lot of elements around in her universe,” Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz<\/strong> told Variety<\/em><\/a>. “It\u2019s a very rich universe\u2026 It\u2019s a very broad and very elastic brand, in terms of opportunities.”<\/p>\n

Ynon previously told TIME<\/em><\/a>, “We\u2019re looking to create movies that become cultural events. If you can excite filmmakers like Greta and Noah [Baumbach]<\/strong> to embrace the opportunity and have creative freedom, you can have a real impact.”<\/p>\n

Barbie 2<\/em> Cast<\/h2>\n

A Barbie 2<\/em> wouldn’t feel right without Margot Robbie<\/strong><\/a>, but a sequel could revolve around any of the Barbies.<\/a> Given what happens to her character by the end of the movie, it would be very interesting how she’d be incorporated into the story. Maybe Barbie would have to go back to Barbie Land for some reason, or more Barbies could come to the real world. There are countless possibilities!<\/p>\n

Margot hasn’t ruled out Barbie 2, but she’s only thinking about the present right now. “It could go a million different directions from this point,” she told TIME<\/em><\/a>. “But I think you fall into a bit of a trap if you try and set up a first movie whilst also planning for sequels.”<\/p>\n
