Adele breaks down in tears over reunion with teacher who 'changed her life'

Adele couldn't hold back the tears as she reunited with her Year 8 teacher Miss McDonald in front of a huge audience - and it was a special moment

An Audience With: Adele surprised by former teacher in audience

Adele broke down in tears as she was reunited with her old school teacher during a special ITV performance tonight.

She made her UK comeback with an incredibly powerful show for ITV's An Audience With - and was overcome with emotion when she realised her old teacher from Chestnut Grove School in Balham, South London, was watching in the crowd.

The mum-of-one was surprised by Miss McDonald moments after she told actress Emma Thompson that the teacher was one of the most influential people from her life.

Emma asked her: "My question is, when you were younger, was there someone who, kind of supported you and inspired you, or, you know protected you from all the trials and tribulations of life and inspired you to go on?"

"Yeah I had a teacher at Chestnut Grove who taught me English," Adele replied. "That was Miss McDonald. She left when I was in year eight. It was just one year, but she got me really into literature. I've always been obsessed with English and obviously now I write lyrics."

She continued: "She was so bloody cool. So engaging, she really made us care and we knew she cared about us."

Adele added that Miss McDonald was so "relatable and likeable" and she'd always look forward to her English lessons.

Emma looked at Adele and said: "Yeah because it's odd actually, funny enough..."

Speaking to Emma, the songstress asked: "Is she here?" as the Cruella star replied: "She's here tonight."

Adele began crying as she saw her old teacher walk through the crowd towards her, before climbing onto the stage to stand beside the star.

They hugged for a moment before the former teacher told her: "Thank you for remembering me."

Adele responded: "Oh my God, you really changed my life."

Fans on Twitter were left sobbing at the touching moment, with many writing on the social media app.

One asked: "Anybody else in floods of tears watching Adele reunite with her teacher ? Cause I bloody am."

"Adele meeting up with her teacher...can't cope," a second penned.

A third shared: "Adele meeting her old English teacher has me BAWLING!!"

Adele studied biology at Chestnut Grove before leaving to attend The Brit School aged 13 – setting her on her path towards global stardom.

On Friday, Adele unleashed her long-awaited fourth studio album – which has been branded a divorce anthem.

The star recorded the record following her split from 47-year-old Simon Konecki – with whom she shares a nine-year-old son named Angelo.

Adele has said she hopes the new album, which is titled 30, will help her son understand exactly why she decided to divorce his father.
