Telly star Nick Hewer has reluctantly been replaced by Colin Murray after his concerned family refused to let him take any chances by going to work
The pandemic has taken so much from 2020, and now even Countdown has been forced to make changes.
The Channel 4 quiz show’s host Nick Hewer has reluctantly stepped down from his post as he shields at home during England’s lockdown.
The 76-year-old star has been replaced by Colin Murray after his concerned family refused to let him take any chances by going to work.
The pensioner falls into the “vulnerable” category due to his age, and those over 70 have been advised to take extra caution amid the pandemic.
Nick said he was "confident" with the channel’s "military style" Covid 19 health and safety protocols, but his family insisted he step down.
He’ll still be on screen for a while due to episodes being filmed in advance.
The former Apprentice favourite took to his Twitter to tell fans the sad news.
"Good luck to Colin Murray, popular dictionary corner guest and Countdown fanatic, who takes over from me as host today and for the rest of Covid Lockdown recordings (although I’ll still be on your screens for a week or two) as this 76 year old shields at home in spite of the amazing military-style safety protocols put in place by ITV Studios and Channel 4.
"Between you and me, I’d have confidently carried on, but the family has handcuffed me to a radiator, saying ‘you’re not going anywhere’.
"So have fun Colin and keep my chair warm for me."
Lord Alan Sugar’s former right-hand-man took over the Countdown hosting role from Jeff Stelling in 2012.
He’s become a firm favourite among viewers and his co-stars, who rushed to the star’s social account to express their sadness over his absence.
Nick's co-host Rachel Riley tweeted: "Stay safe TV husband! And good luck temporary TV boyfriend @ColinMurray."
Stand-in host Colin replied, admitting he’s feeling the "nerves" but thanked Nick for his "kind" message, writing: "That’s so very kind of you and much appreciated!
"You have calmed my nerves somewhat, so thank you! I shall make sure to keep your dressing room spotless! Love to the family."
