Actor Christopher Eccleston slammed government hypocrisy over telling everyone to save the NHS when he pointed out they capped their wages three years ago

Doctor Who star Christopher Eccleston slated the government's hypocrisy over protecting the NHS after capping their pay.

The actor, 56, took aim at the government for their treatment of the NHS during his appearance on Lorraine on Monday.

From north London, Chris spoke out against the government the day after Prime Minister Boris Johnson thanked NHS workers for saving his life from coronavirus.

In a furious tirade, the award-nominated star hit out at the "hypocrisy" of the cabinet telling everyone to protect the NHS after capping their wages three years ago.

He said: "It has always been a part of my life, mum and dad spoke highly [of the NHS].

"What has happened is that the world has changed- the NHS will no longer be a political football for any of the party, it is protected because it is the greatest expression of Britain we have.

"It is our nation's conscience, it is saving our lives.

"Three years ago there were wages caps by the cabinet who are now telling us to protect the NHS - the hypocrisy there."

Elsewhere in the interview, Chris shared his tips for staying health amid the lockdown.

The actor admitted he had cut down on the booze and he's been exercising to try and be able to handle the virus without going to hospital.

He said: "Exercise has helped me. I've cut down on the booze... because I'm thinking if I can protect my immune system... my aim is to be able to handle it without going to hospital.

"If I can keep myself away from the NHS, if somebody older... needs a bed they'd get the bed."

However, the star confessed he would find lockdown a struggle if he was living in a tower block without a back garden.

He added: "If I was in a tower block without a back garden I don't know how I'd handle it."
