Mr Bean could be set for comeback as Richard Curtis 'working on new version'

According to reports, Rowan Atkinson's legendary character Mr Bean could be back in a new-look series

Mr Bean fans might finally get a comeback of the famous character according to reports.

It's reported that writer Richard Curtis, who helped create the sitcom alongside the man who portrayed him, Rowan Atkinson, is planning an update.

Amid recent claims that an animated movie was in the works by Atkinson, Curtis has apparently shared an idea on how to bring the funnyman back.

According to The Sun, Curtis is planning a new-look version which would see Mr Bean being old.

Viewers could see a much grumpier Bean if this is the case, with the character celebrating his 30th anniversary this year.

According to the publication, Richard revealed: "Old Bean is what we’re now thinking of doing."

ITV is airing a special look back of Mr Bean's best moments on Sunday evening, with it thought the news features in this.

Happy Birthday Mr Bean celebrates 30 years of the character and sitcom, from the episodes to the hit films.

Just recently, Rowan said playing the character could be "stressful and exhausting".

He also told the Radio Times : "Mr Bean's success has never surprised me.

"Watching an adult behaving in a childish way without being remotely aware of his inappropriateness is fundamentally funny."

Rowan continued: "The fact the comedy is visual rather than verbal means it has been successful internationally, too."

He added: "It's very pleasing that people want to connect with Mr Bean, but I have no desire to have any presence on social media. What happens there is a sideshow in my world.

"He actually has a disproportionately high following in Muslim countries and places with stricter creative regimes than our own.

"A more verbal comic would have difficulties avoiding subjects that offend those with greater sensitivities. But it doesn't seem to be a problem for Mr Bean."

Happy Birthday Mr Bean airs at 8pm on ITV.
