Met Eireann issues thunderstorm warning for six counties as 'torrential downpours' forecast

A Status Yellow warning has been issued for a number of areas, with localised flooding possible

Met Eireann has issued a weather warning for six counties as the summer weather is set to take a turn for a number of areas in the northwest.

The national forecaster has issued a Status Yellow thunderstorm warning for Donegal and all counties in Connacht - Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo.

As this week's heat blast begins to come to an end, thunderstorms are expected to develop today in certain areas and will continue into Friday, with the risk of potential downpours and localised flooding.

Met Eireann has warned that there is also the potential for lightning damage, hail, hazardous driving conditions and gusty winds. The weather warning will come into place at 3pm on Thursday and will remain valid until 6pm on Friday.

This comes as the national forecaster has also extended its Status Yellow high-temperature warning by 24 hours as Ireland continues to face a heat blast.

With today, Thursday June 25, likely to be the warmest day this week, it's possible that the Ireland high-temperature record will be broken this afternoon as a significantly hot and humid day is expected.

Friday was originally signalled to be the day when temperatures would begin to cool but Met Eireann has since extended its high-temperature warning to 9am on Saturday morning.

Met Eireann warned that there will be "maximum temperatures in excess of 27°C in many counties combined with night-time minima in excess of 15°C expected."

A weather advisory is also in place, with water safety issues highlighted due to the increased use of lakes and beaches, as well as uncomfortable sleeping conditions. Heat stress is also possible.

A Met Eireann spokesperson said: "Exceptionally warm weather will occur over Ireland this week. Daytime temperatures will exceed 25 degrees, with temperatures possibly reaching 30 degrees on Thursday. Very mild, humid and possibly uncomfortable at night as temperatures will generally stay above 15 degrees. Thunderstorms are possible also, particularly on Thursday."
