Status Orange warning for six counties as Met Eireann forecasts 'significant snowfall' this weekend

Met Éireann has issued multiple weather alerts for this weekend, warning of freezing temperatures and snowfall for the country

Met Éireann has issued a number of weather warnings ahead of the weekend, with 24 hours of snow and sleet possible as temperatures plummet.

The national forecaster issued a Status Orange Snow-Ice warning, alongside a Status Yellow Rain and Snow warning, and a Status Yellow Snow-Ice warning for Saturday into Sunday, warning of snowfall accumulations, hazardous travelling conditions, and animal welfare issues.

A Weather Advisory has also been put in place for Ireland from midnight on Saturday until midnight on Sunday, with falls of rain, sleet and snow, alongside icy conditions throughout the weekend.

Firstly, a Status Yellow - Rain and Snow warning for Cork and Kerry will come into effect at 1pm on Saturday, lasting until 5pm on Sunday, with Met Éireann warning heavy rain will transition into sleet and snow.

Some potential impacts for these counties include hazardous travelling conditions, poor visibility, travel disruption and localised flooding.

Secondly, a 24-hour Status Orange - Snow-Ice warning for Carlow, Kilkenny, Wicklow, Clare, Limerick, and Tipperary will be in place from 5pm on Saturday until 5pm on Sunday.

Met Éireann warned significant snowfall accumulations are expected with impacts including very difficult travelling conditions, poor visibility, travel disruption delays to public transport likely (air, rail, bus), difficult conditions underfoot and animal welfare issues.

A Status Yellow - Snow-Ice warning is also in place for all of Leinster and Connacht, as well as the counties Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Clare, Limerick, Tipperary, and Waterford.

Met Éireann have warned of falls of sleet and snow with snowfall accumulations expected for these counties for 24 hours from 5pm on Saturday until 5pm on Sunday.

Potential impacts include hazardous travelling conditions, poor visibility and travel disruption.

A Weather Advisory has also been put in place for Ireland from midnight on Saturday until midnight on Sunday. Met Éireann have warned of sleet and snow in places this weekend, with some disruption possible over the period.

A forecaster wrote: “A spell of rain will spread northwards over Ireland during the course of Saturday, turning to sleet and snow in some areas.

“Rain, sleet and snow will continue for a time on Sunday before clearing eastwards into the Irish Sea.”

They added that significant accumulations of snow are likely in some counties, and that there may be hazardous travelling conditions along with travel and service disruption.

Meanwhile, the UK Met Office also issued a Yellow - Ice Warning for Antrim, Down, Tyrone, Derry.

The weather service warned that icy surfaces could lead to difficult travel conditions from 4pm on Friday until 10am on Saturday.
