Storing blankets efficiently — and attractively — can be a challenge. From throw blankets to wool and weighted ones, they tend to pile up faster than we realize. "With so many types of wonderful blankets to collect, you may find yourself running out of creative storage ideas," says organization professional Marty Basher of Modular Closets. Add bulky comforters, limited closet space, and the desire to keep things both functional and stylish, and smart storage becomes a must.

For wool blankets, pest protection and airflow are key. "Wool blankets are a little more pretentious than other synthetic blankets," says Maegan Bucur, editor in chief of Rhythm of the Home. "It is best to completely dry wool blankets before storing them." She recommends storage solutions such as resealable plastic containers or wicker baskets, which "keep them dry and well-aired."

Down blankets need a bit more structure. "These bulkier items can take up space and can also collect dust," says designer Lisa Galano. "I find it's very important to protect your heavier blankets and down comforters when not in heavy rotation by first laundering them appropriately, then storing them in an airtight, recyclable container or bag with a zipper or a tight seal." To keep them fresh, she adds, "I also like to throw in a Meyer's dryer sheet or two when storing linens."

Small spaces call for creativity. "The secret to storing blankets when low on space is utilizing dead spaces next to the ceiling," says Stefan Bucur, founder of Rhythm of the Home. "Install floating shelves, ones that ideally come with built-in hangers, on the walls close to the ceiling to increase the storing capacity of the room tenfold."

And for options that double as decor, interior designer Beth Diana Smith swears by storage that works hard and looks good. "I like to store blankets in places that are easy to access, have a dual purpose, or act as hidden storage," she says. "I love using trunks and oversized lidded wicker or seagrass baskets. Baskets are great for hidden storage and can be beautiful decor pieces!"

From baskets to trunks to under-bed organizers, these expert-approved ideas make it easy to keep your space cozy, clean, and clutter-free.
